As we have had our grandchildren with us since mid-December, we have been teaching them to pray along with us, a grace that will easily be diminished in its good work when gathering together in a common assembly of believers is forsaken; and such has been the case with their parents. And this happens quite often in these days, for the wisdom required to raise a child unto God must come from the very throne of grace, Jesus Christ ruling and reigning in the hearts of regenerated parents through the Holy Spirit.

The distractions that plagued our families when I was a child in the sixties, increased while I was a teen in the seventies, and has run amuck half a century after my birth. The love and wisdom that came by God’s grace to fathers of families in the days that raised up missionaries like John G. Paton are rare commodities in our homes today. Why? Is it because God no longer dispenses such grace through the precious sacrifice of Jesus Christ? God forbid. We have left off our duties and responsibilities. Though we certainly believe the sovereignty and good providence of God by His free grace, but sometimes we work out our own salvation and walk in the spirit in such a way that our lives reflect that we have received no such grace.

Has not “the grace of God that bringeth salvation… appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works” (Titus 2:11-14)? As the scripture indeed asks, “For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife” (1 Corinthians 7:16)? cannot this also say in the same principal of truth, ”For what knowest thou, O woman, whether thou shalt save thy child? or how knowest thou, O father, whether thou shalt save thy children?”

Because of the precious grace of God, that comes with every grace held in faith’s checkbook, let us apply ourselves diligently and earnestly to raise our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

By God’s grace and good providence He has saved my much later in my life, so that the pitfalls common to the situations and circumstances today in America may be adressed humbly and soberly. Here are a few prayers we are teaching our young grandchildren, Melissa (almost 4) and Evelyn (2), to recite prior to the free prayers we offer as a family in our devotions:

For Meals. This prayer was sung at our mealtimes for many years, and stopped when Rachel, our youngest (now 15), began praying on her own. I would offer prayers of thanksgiving and invocations of blessing upon our meal and fellowship around the table immediately afterward. At dinner, I would read a chapter of a book on the life of a missionary, or a wonderful treatise such as John Bunyan’s Christian Behavior, taking the original language as I read it, and making in a bit more plain for the understanding of my children. This prayer is not original from me. In fact, this was taught to my wife and her family by her father, who had been a deacon in the Wesley United Methodist Church in Olongapo City, Philippines before he passed away in 1986. So the exact origin, as far as I know, is unknown. Here is that prayer:

God is great and God is good,
And we thank you for this food.
By Your grace must all be fed.
Give us, Lord, our daily bread.
Amen.

For Bedtime. I don’t like much of the prayers children have been taught for bedtime, so I wrote this simple rhyming prayer for my granddaughters:

Our Father who in heaven lives
Your name is holy and You give
Me sleep at night so I’ll be strong;
Teach me of Jesus, Your dear Son.
Please show me how to trust in Christ;
May Your Word be my delight.
I pray these things in Jesus name,
For in Him only there’s no shame.
Amen.

At Other Times. Although we will wait to teach this prayer to them outright, we do recite this during other devotions so that they may here this rhyming paraphrase of The Disciple’s Prayer (aka The Lord’s Prayer) daily. I wrote this paraphrase to be included in A Puritan Bible Primer.

Questions 1-10 of “A Primer Catechism” from A Puritan Bible Primer

May be sung to familiar Common Meter tunes such as Azmon, Arlington, New Britain, or Ortonville. Popular hymns sung to these meters are “O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing,” “Am I a Soldier of the Cross,” “Amazing Grace,” or “Majestic Sweetness Sits Enthroned,” respectively.

8.6.8.6. C.M.

The Primer first asks, Who made you?
”God,” my answer sings;
What else did God make? is ask’d next:
Answer: God made all things.

Why did God make you and all things?
The answer is quite dear:
For His own glory, His alone,
It cannot be more clear.

And, How can God be glorified?
We’re ask’d quite candidly,
By loving Him; and His commands,
We’ll do obediently.

Why should I glorify my God?
That should be plain to see;
God made me, and that is not all,
He does take care of me.

Are there more Gods than one? I’m ask’d:
There is only one God.
We worship this one God of truth,
His way is straight, not broad.

How many Persons do exist
In God who is just one?
God in three Persons does exist:
Father, Spirit, and Son.

God is spirit and does not have
A body like men, so—
When someone asks me, Where is God?
He’s everywhere, you know.

A Body of Divinity
By Thomas Watson
Edited in Modern English by Jon Cardwell

“if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast,” —Colossians 1:23

II. The best way for Christians to be established is to be firmly stable.

II. The second proposition is that the way for Christians to be settled is to be firmly stable, or well grounded. “If indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast” (Colossians 1:23). The Greek word for stable is a metaphor, which hints of a building with the foundation well laid. Christians should be stable in the essential points of religion, and have their foundation well laid.

Here let me speak to two things:

I. We should be well established in the knowledge of fundamentals. The apostle speaks of “the basic principles of the oracles of God” (Hebrews 5:12). In all arts and sciences, logic, physic, mathematics, there are some things that must be previously known, some rules and principles that must necessarily be understood for the practice of those arts; likewise, in religious studies; primary principles must be established. The knowledge of the foundation and principles of religion is exceedingly useful.

(1.) Without knowledge of the fundamentals, we cannot serve God appropriately. We can never worship God acceptably, unless we worship him regularly; and how can we do that, if we are ignorant of the rules and elements of religion? We are to give God a “reasonable service” (Romans 12:2, KJV). If we do not understand the foundation of religion, how can it be a reasonable service?

(2.) Fundamental religious knowledge greatly enriches the mind. It is a lamp to our feet; it directs us in the whole course of Christianity, as the eye directs the body. Knowledge of fundamentals is the golden key that opens the chief mysteries of religion; it gives us a whole system and body of divinity, exactly drawn in all its features and lively colors; it helps us to understand many of those difficult things which occur in the reading of the word; it helps to untie many Scripture knots.

(3.) Fundamental religious knowledge furnishes us with spiritual armor; and weapons to fight against the adversaries of the truth.

(4.) Fundamental religious knowledge is the holy seed from which grace is formed. It is semen fidei, the “seed of faith” (see Psalm 9:10). It is radix amoris, the “root of love” (see Ephesians 3:17), “being rooted and grounded in love.” The knowledge of principles contributes to making the redeemed soul a complete Christian.

II. This grounding is the best way to be steadfast: ‘stable and steadfast.’ A tree, that it may be well settled, must be well rooted; so, if you would be well settled in religion, you must be rooted in its principles. We read in Plutarch of one who set up a dead man, and he would not stand. ‘Oh,’ said he, ‘there should be something within.’ So that we may stand in unstable times, there must be a principle of knowledge within; first stable (grounded, foundational), and then steadfast (settled). To keep the ship from overturning, it must have its anchor fastened. Knowledge of principles is to the soul as the anchor to the ship, which holds it steady in the midst of the rolling waves of error, or the violent winds of persecution. First grounded and then settled. First stable, then steadfast.

Use one: See the reason why so many people are unsettled, ready to embrace every novel opinion, and dress themselves in as many religions as fashions; it is because they are ungrounded. See how the apostle joins these two together, “ignorant and unstable” (2 Peter 3:16). Such as are unlearned in the main points of Biblical doctrine are unstable. As the body cannot be strong when the muscles have shrunk or the ligaments damaged; so neither can the Christian be strong in religion who wants the grounds of knowledge, which are the sinews to strengthen and establish him.

Use two: See what great necessity there is for laying down the main principals of religion by catechizing, so that the weakest judgment may be instructed in the knowledge of the truth, and strengthened in the love of it. Catechizing is the best expedient for grounding and settling people. I fear one reason why there has been no more good done by preaching, has been because the chief heads and articles in religion have not been explained in a catechistical way. Catechizing is laying the foundation (Hebrews 6:6). To preach and not catechize is to build without foundation.

Catechizing is not novel; it is apostolic. The primitive church had their forms of catechism, as those phrases imply, a “pattern of sound words” (2 Timothy 1:13), end “the basic principles of the oracles of God” (Hebrews 5:12). The early church had its catechumenoi, as Grotius and Erasmus observe. Many of the ancient fathers have written for it, as Fulgentius, Austin, Theodoret, Lactantius, and others. God has given great success to it. By laying down the grounds of religion catechistically, Christians have been clearly instructed and wondrously built up in the Christian faith, insomuch that Julian the apostate, seeing the great success of catechizing, put down all schools and places of public literature, and instructing of youth. It is my design, therefore (with the blessing of God); to begin this work of catechizing the next Sabbath day; and I intend every other Sabbath, in the afternoon, to make it my whole work to lay down the grounds and fundamentals of religion in a catechistical way. If I am hindered in this work by men, or taken away by death, I hope God will raise up some other laborer in the vineyard among you, that may perfect the work which I am now beginning.
